SCIATICA

What Is Sciatica?
Originating from the lumbar spine and extending into the buttocks and down the legs, the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. Sciatica, or sciatic neuralgia, is a condition in which this nerve is compressed creating pain. This pain usually starts in the lower back and extends into the back of the leg and even into the foot. In addition to pain, this compression of the sciatic nerve can cause weakness, tingling, and numbness. Extended periods of standing or sitting can be unbearably painful when dealing with sciatica. Sciatica requires attention to avoid permanent nerve damage. At our Middleton Chiropractic office, you will find that Dr. Jeff Harris is well trained to address your sciatic issues.

How Do You Develop Sciatica?
Numerous conditions can develop into sciatica. The most frequent factor is disc injury or bulging discs which cause the disc to compress on the nerve root. When pinched by the compression of vertebrae or disc in your lower back, the roots of the nerve become inflamed which causes the pain. Disc injuries are the result of poor posture, continuous bending over, injury or accidents, pregnancy, trauma or just plain old genetics.
